About the MASTERCLASS

This digital masterclass is a high-intensity 'musical workout' designed to move you beyond theory and into true fluency. Led by sarod maestro Pandit Prattyush Banerjee and directed by Soumik Datta, this 'digital apprenticeship' invites instrumentalists of all backgrounds, from Western Classical to Jazz, to sit across from a master in real-time.  Through immersive sessions, you will build muscle memory, master soulful ornamentations like Meend and Gamak, and decode the complex rhythmic cycles of the Tabla. Whether you play the violin, guitar, flute, or piano, you’ll learn the structured 'math and magic' of the Raga system. All you need is a basic-to-intermediate command of your instrument and a willingness to practice. No previous experience with Indian Classical music is required, just an open ear and a passion for learning. This Masterclass is co-produced by Soumik Datta Arts, Trinity Laban, Aga Khan Foundation and Arts Council England.

Pandit Prattyush Banerjee

Pandit Prattyush Banerjee is an internationally acclaimed Sarod maestro, composer, and innovative instrument designer based in Kolkata. A leading disciple of the legendary Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, he is a celebrated torchbearer of the Senia-Shahjahanpur gharana. His approach blends traditional music with influences from vocal technique, tabla, and even Western classical piano. He is recognized for expanding the expressive range of the sarod through both performance and instrument design. Notably, he brought the intricate gestures of tappa, a semi-classical vocal form known for swift and angular melodic movement, into sarod performance for the first time.
